Creatures of the Deep Sea: “Sea”quel

The deep sea has more animal life, than anywhere else on earth. In this article, I will share with you more of God’s deep sea creatures. This is a sequel to my first article on Creatures of the Deep Sea. Each of these featured creatures, have different bodily functions to help them survive in the deep. All of them are designed differently, not only to survive in certain depths, but to show the creativity of our powerful, and loving God.

1 Abyssal Grenadier

This fish is found all over the world’s oceans, at depths between 2,624 to 13,123 feet. The eyes of the fish are large, so it can see in the dark depths. Adults can grow to lengths of around 20 to 40 cm. The diet of the Grenadier changes as it matures. This fish has two dorsal fins which allow it a unique flexibility to move about in the ocean. When they’re young, Grenadiers eat bottom dwelling ( benthic ) invertebrates like crustaceans and sea cucumbers. The adults eat sea urchins, fish and cephalopods (squids octopuses etc).

2 Gulper Eel

Also known as the Pelican Eel, it gets it’s name from it’s large mouth that it uses for hunting prey. The diet of this fish consists of squid, other invertebrates, and crustaceans. A very radical thing about the Eel, is God made it with the ability to expand it’s mouth large like a water balloon. Just like the Puffer Fish, the eel takes in water, which spreads the flabby skin around it’s jaws, to make them wider. This is how it can swallow prey much larger than itself! It has also been observed doing this trick for other mysterious reasons. Like the Grenadier, the Gulper Eel can be found in all oceans. Only in the tropical and temperate areas. They live at depths of 500 to 6,000 feet!

3 Sea Angel

The Sea Angel is a kind of sea slug in the dark depths of the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans. The way it feeds is very strange. It shoots finger-like tentacles out of it’s head, in order to grab on to it’s sea snail prey. That sounds like something from a sci-fi movie! Sea Angels are actually born with shells, and as they mature into adults they loose them. Like the life cycle of a butterfly! God designed them with a semi-transparent body, where you can clearly see their internal organs. The Sea Angel is very small, only growing to less than an inch long (1-2 cm). It is one of God’s natural beauties of the deep!

4 Antarctic Scale Worm

The Antarctic Scale Worm is probably one of the weirdest deep sea creatures I’ve ever seen! It can grow to be about 8 inches long, and 4 inches in width. As it’s name suggests, it lives on the bottom of the southern ocean, around Antarctica. It lives at depths of around 1,706 to 2,198 feet deep! Geez! The preferred part of this worm’s diet are sea spiders, but researchers believe that it could be a cannibal, eating their own kind. You may think that the gray body part is it’s head, but its actually not! Its the worm’s retractable throat, that extends when the worm is feeding! Oh my goodness, how weird! When God created the sea creatures on day 5 of creation, he didn’t just create the beautiful and lovely creatures. But also the weird and ugly, to us. However, God said, “It is good”.

5 Sea toad

The sea toad is one of my favorite fish in the deep. The largest ones can grow 12 inches in length. Some species have been found in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. Some also have been found at a depth of 8,070 feet! It is one of the most patient of creatures on earth! The Sea toad can wait for an extremely long time for prey, like fish and shrimp to pass by. When it wants to move to a new hunting spot, it uses special fins that God designed to help the fish move slowly from place to place. Whenever there’s a predator, it can swim away just as good as any other fish. This fish, is awesome!

6 Mariana Snailfish

This is the world’s deepest known fish, living at depths of over 26,000 feet! How crazy is that! Since they live far down in the deep, and have no known predators, this fish is at the top of the food chain in the Mariana Trench (Located in the western pacific). They can grow at lengths of just 4 inches. As you can see, they do look like over sized tadpoles. If you can see on the picture, along the top part of it’s jaw are small bumps, that help it find it’s way in the dark depths, and to find it’s favorite meal. Crustaceans.

Yeti Crab

One of my favorite deep sea crustaceans, the Yeti Crab gets it’s name from those hairy arms and legs, which resemble the mythical Yeti. Found off the Pacific-Antarctic coast of Easter Island (in the Southern Ocean), it lives around the boiling hot hydrothermal vents! Wow! Scientists believe those hairy arms are used to catch a kind of bacteria, that pour from the vents, but they do also eat the tissue of mussels. This creature has been observed at depths of more than 7,200 feet.

Creator and Savior

What would it be like if God created only one animal for us to enjoy? Would you think that animal could become boring after a long while? Instead, God created millions of His creatures for us to enjoy, and even today, new kinds of animal life are still being discovered, even in the deep.

Or what if God created everything in all black or white, and we could not see color. Or what if He only created one color, like red. God created vast variety in all of life. This shows He is creative and powerful. It also shows how He is thoughtful and caring for us, to give us so much.

In fact, God showed His greatest thoughtfulness and care for us, in sending Jesus the loving Savior. He designed life, and came to redeem us from our sins and give us everlasting life.

As I mentioned the patience of the Sea Toad, I think of the patience of God. He is most patient of all. Have you received the greatest gift and life through Jesus Christ?

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance”. 2 Peter 3:9

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made…

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name…

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:1-3, 12, 14
