More Maximus’

Today I’m going to share with you about some animals that have Maximus in their scientific names, and those who receive the gospel of Jesus, will receive a GREAT name. I find this very cool!

1 Elephas maximus

Elephas maximus is the scientific name for the Asian Elephant. Found in Asiatic countries like Thailand, Shri Lanka, Borneo, India and more. They live in tropical forests, but do visit clearings or open fields to feed on grass. They also eat fruit, palm leaves, tree bark, roots, shrubs and stems. These elephants can eat up to 375 pounds of food each day. The only predators of the Asian elephant are tigers, which would probably take a young calf. The best way to tell African and Asian elephants apart are their ears. Asian elephants have smaller ears, while the ears of the African elephant are larger. Another way to tell them apart is their trunks. African elephants have two finger like digits on the tips of their trunks for grabbing small things, like a leaf or a twig. The Asian elephant only has one finger-like digit, but it can pick up small things too.

2 Lachnolaimus maximus

Lachnolaimus maximus is the scientific name for the Hogfish. They can be found in reefs in the western Atlantic, off the coasts of Canada, northern South America, Nova Scotia, and the gulf of Mexico. A member of the wrasse family (a family of reef fish) which gets it’s name from the way they root around the sandy sea floor. Just like how wild (or feral) hogs use their muzzles and tusks to sift through the mud, looking for soft roots and protein rich grubs. The diet of this fish, consists of sea urchins, mollusks, and also crabs. It’s another cool animal, with Maximus in it’s scientific name!

3 Elephant Bird

The scientific name for the ( now extinct ) Elephant bird is Aepyornis maximus. It was one of the largest birds in the world, standing at 10 feet tall, and weighing around 1100 lb. Their home was the island of Madagascar, where their fossils remains and egg shells have been found. They were so big, they laid eggs that were almost the size of a water melon. No one knows what these birds ate, but one suggested possibility could be coconuts from palm trees. Even the reason for it’s extinction is unknown, but scientists agree, it quite possibly could be due to the hunting by humans. After Noah’s flood when the two ostrich like birds embarked from the ark, they reproduced all the different members of the Ratite family ( ostrich, rea, emu, etc ), including the elephant bird. It is quite possible when humans arrived on the island of Madagascar ( possibly from Indonesia ) they hunted the birds for their eggs and meat, or even destroyed their habitats, by over development. By the 17th century, these large birds became extinct.

4 Royal Tern

The Royal tern’s scientific name is Thalasseus maximus. Found on the east coast of the U.S, the coast of Mexico, as well as the southern California coast. They nest along the Gulf Coast, with nesting colonies up to 10,000 terns. The nest is just a shallow scrape in the sand, lined with small amounts of grass. The female Royal Tern can lay one to two eggs. They can dive from 40 to 50 feet into the water to hunt for fish. I find them beautiful, with that black sloping crest and red bill.

Conclusion

Every animal has a scientific name, so that way every nation around the world can understand the meaning of what that animal is. I find it interesting, because it was the first assignment of a job given to Adam in the Garden of Eden at the beginning of creation. God told Adam to name every animal. This is what people ( scientists, explorers, etc.) are still doing today. Each time a new discovery is made, which continues to happen, scientists give it a name.

Naming the animals is something that is supposed to and can glorify the Creator and Savior Jesus Christ (However, sadly, some names given to the animals these days, are not appropriate or pleasing. I am sure this is not pleasing to God)

Names are important to God. In Revelations the Lord speaks about a very special name for all those who have received the Lord as their Savior. There is a white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17, that we will symbolically obtain, and will have a “new name” on it for every one of us, that only Jesus Himself knows. The stone symbolizes our freedom and purity from all sin, as well as our faithfulness to endure our own personal battles by His grace, and overcome, as we enter the kingdom of heaven.

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it”. Revelation 2:17
