Crowded Party: California Sea Lions

Today I’m going to share with you about my visit with sea lions, and explain some differences between the California sea lion and the Steller sea lion.

On February, 2022, my family and I stayed at the beach, at an inn for one night, in Lincoln City, Oregon. The next morning we headed out to Newport to walk around downtown, and visit one of my favorite marine animals. California sea lions! (They leave the California Channel Islands after breeding season, and travel north to the Oregon coast and other areas for winter feeding grounds).

When we arrived at the docks, there were a lot of sea lions! More than we have ever seen. The docks were crowded, with little room to spare. I laughed. It was hilarious watching them fight for the best spot, along with hearing their silly sea lion communication. In their language, they were communicating, “get off this spot, it is mine”! I even tried to mimic them with my voice. That was fun. It was a constant fighting scene. The mostly male population, battled for space and dominancy. When one had enough, it left the dock to others, and went on it’s way.

When I looked out over Yaquina bay, I saw a huge pile of boulders that was also covered with sea lions. A group of them were sticking their flippers out of the water, as they were taking an underwater snooze. I couldn’t get enough of their barking, and growling, it was very hilarious!

After the sea lion visit, my family and I walked around town to check out the shops and restaurants. Then it was time to go. Those moments with my family and the sea lions are memories that I will hold on to for the rest of my life.

I have made many trips to the Oregon Zoo with my family since I was very young. I remember years ago visiting the Stellar sea lions there. How do people know the difference between California and Steller sea lions? Steller sea lions are larger than California sea lions (males can grow 11 feet in length, and weigh 2,500 lbs), and have thicker necks. While California sea lions grow 6 feet in length, and weigh 220 lb. My favorite way to tell them apart is by their vocalization. California sea lions bark, grunt and growl (arf, arf, arf). While Steller sea lions make low rumbling growls (growl, growl, growl).

Sea Lions are one of God’s many creations that glorify Him, through funny behavior, and the way they are designed to move about in their environment. It’s also amazing, and show God’s creativity and design how He gives each species of Sea Lions a different vocalization (or voice).

He’s the ultimate designer, and also the only way to everlasting life.

Jesus died on that cross not because He had to, but because He wanted to. He wanted to give every person who is a sinner, a way to everlasting life in heaven. I also believe He rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, where He’s making a place for those who believe in Him, who put their faith, hope and trust in Him.

He created all things for His glory. He created the Sea Lion. The most important of His creation is people, made in His image.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
